February 1st 2022 marks a new year (Lunar New Year)starting date for some East Asian countries. It’s when the biggest holiday celebration happens in some Asian countries like China, Korea, Vietnam and Mongolia. Celebrations traditionally last for 15 days, starting on Lunar New Year’s Eve and continuing till the Lantern Festiva, which happens on the last day.
It is called The Lunar New Year and that’s because it’s the start of a new cycle for the moon after the winter solstice, based on the lunisolar calendar. A lot of confusion happens about whether it is the same as what others call Chinese New Year, and the answer is yes. It’s also known as the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival.
Each lunar year symbolises an animal from the Chinese zodiac. There are 12 zodiac animals in total and all from Chinese mythology which correspond to an element of wisdom found in nature. Those animals are consist of the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Last year was the year of Ox and this year is the year of the Tiger.
Happy Lunar New Year to our community, wishing you happiness and success.
